Brazil’s communists warn of ‘the greatest health and hospital crisis in history,’ as death toll passes 300,000

THE Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) has warned that the country is undergoing “the greatest health and hospital crisis in history” after the coronavirus death toll passed 300,000.

The National Council of Health Secretaries announced the grim milestone on Wednesday night. Only the United States has had more people die from Covid-19.

PCdoB parliamentary leader Renildo Calheiros called on President Jair Bolsonaro to “wake up” and stop undermining the public health response as hospitals in the capital Brasilia reported lining their floors with corpses because their morgues are full.

With the country’s health system overrun, thousands of critically ill patients are waiting for intensive care beds to become available.

Mr Calheiros said that, though evidence of the danger posed by Covid-19 had mounted for over a year, the president “preferred to deny science, access to vaccines and publicly discourage preventive measures, such as wearing masks and social isolation.

“Unfortunately, he has now demonstrated that it is not a ‘little flu’,” he said, a reference to Mr Bolsonaro’s infamous dismissal of the new virus last year.

With MPs from parties of both left and right saying that they were fielding calls from desperate constituents with dying relatives unable to get into hospital, even allies of the president have called on him to change course.

Lower house Speaker Arthur Lira acknowledged that the public mood was turning to anger on Wednesday. “There is a lot of solidarity, but everything has its limits. Everything,” he said.

Mr Bolsonaro tried to strike an upbeat note on Tuesday in an address to the nation in which he promised that 2021 would be “the year of vaccination.” But in many cities, residents met the address with pot-banging protests to drown out his words.

The Communist Party pointed out that not only has the Bolsonaro administration itself refused to enforce social distancing or a lockdown, this month it tried – and failed – to get the Supreme Court to reverse such measures adopted by individual states.

PCdoB MP Daniel Almeida said he hoped that Tuesday’s address presaged a change of policy. “It seems that despair is knocking on Bolsonaro’s door. The shocking thing is that we need record deaths for many people to pay attention to the irresponsibility of the government. Over 300,000 lives lost? It’s genocide.”

STATEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY WITH THE PCB AND Comrade Taly! “YOU FASCISTS THAT TORTURED Taly Nayandra Figueira dos Santos ARE COWARDS”

3/6/2017

The PCUSA denounces the arbitrary arrest and barbaric torture of Taly Nayandra Figueira dos Santos, cadre of the PCB in Manaus, capital of the Amazonas, on the 25th of February by the military police. In particular, we denounce the physical and psychological violence used against her during her detention, and consider it an attack on us. “An injury to one is an injury to all.”

The evidence underlines that the arrest of comrade Taly and one more member of the PCB was deliberate. The comrade was a candidate for the position of Deputy Mayor of Manaus in the local elections of 2016, was recognized by the police detachment, was insulted for being a communist, was struck and lost consciousness in the detention centre, and received open threats against her life.

The PCUSA expresses its solidarity with comrade Taly Nayandra and the Brazilian Communist Party. The state and federal authorities responsible for this cowardly attack must be held accountable for their total lack of respect for democracy and freedom of expression.. The case must be unraveled and the responsible ones should be exemplary punished. No act to terrorize, criminalize or restrict the activity of the communists will succeed! This act of cowardice of the state authorities in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil will NOT go unchallenged.

Solidarity with comrade Taly Nayandra of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB)

https://communismgr.blogspot.com/2017/03/solidarity-with-comrade-taly-nayandra.html
With a statement, the Brazilian Communist Party (Partido Comunista Brasileiro) strongly denounces the brutality of the Brazilian Military Police against the PCB and Communist Youth Union’s member Taly Nayandra Figueira dos Santos.

A indigenous activist and militant communist, Nayandra has been a candidate for vice-mayor in the city of Manaus, in the region of Amazonas.

According to the PCB, comrade Taly Nayandra was arrested by the local Military Police on Saturday 25th of February and suffered physical and psychological torture for more than an hour.

Nayandra was placed in a room alone and was severely beaten by police officers with punches, face slaps and kicks, while she was also psychologically battered. After all this torture, she was left alone in a street of São Raimundo neighborhood in Manaus.
The Amazonas organisation of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB-AM) reiterates its support for comrade Taly Nayandra, expresses solidarity and repudiates the aggression that she has suffered. According to the PCB, it is evident that the reasons behind Nayandra’s arrest and torture are strictly political and chauvinist.

Such a situation is unacceptable. We are waiting for a response from the Military Police about what happened and we will make the necessary decisions so that one more crime does not go unpunished” says the statement of the Amazonas organisation of the PCB.

KKE condemns the arrest of Taly Nayandra.

With a message to the PCB, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) condemns the arbitrary arrest of the Brazilian communist.

More specifically “the KKE expresses its solidarity to comrade Taly Nayandra and the Brazilian Communist Party. The state and federal authorities of the country bear big responsibilities. The case must be elucidated and an exemplary punishment of the perpetrators must take place. No act of intimidation, criminalization or restriction of communist action will pass”.

Olga Benário Prestes (1908-1942)

https://communismgr.blogspot.com/2016/10/olga-benario-prestes-1908-1942.html
Olga Benário Prestes is an extraordinary- but not broadly known- case of a Brazilian communist hero. Olga was born in Munich, Germany as Olga Gutmann Benário, to a Jewish family. At the age of 15, In 1923, she joined the Communist Youth International and in 1928 she helped her husband and comrade Otto Braun’s escape from Moabit prison. She went to Czechoslovakia and from there, reunited with Braun, to Moscow. As an active figure of the Communist Youth International, Olga undertakes several missions; in one of these she was briefly arrested in Britain accussed as a spy.

In 1934 she was tasked with helping the return to Brazil of Luís Carlos Prestes, the leader of the Communist Party of Brazil, to whom she was assigned as a bodyguard. In order to accomplish this mission, false papers were created stating that they were a Portuguese married couple. After a failed insurrection in November 1935, Benário and her husband went into hiding, and after barely escaping a police raid at Ipanema, they were both eventually arrested in January 1936, during the harsh anti-communist campaign declared after dictator Getúlio Vargas had proclaimed martial law and was already plotting the 1937 coup that would eventually lead to the institution of the fascist-like Estado Novo régime.
The real identity of Olga was revealed as a result of the close collaboration between the Brazilian diplomacy and Gestapo. After a demand by the Nazi Germany and despite an international campaign, Olga was taken back to Germany in September 1936. The captain of the German liner that took her, cancelled scheduled stops in non-German European ports, in order to avoid possible communist attempts at rescuing her. On arrival, Olga was put in prison, where she gave birth to a daughter, Anita Leocádia. The child was subsequently released into the care of her grandmother, Leocádia Prestes.

This brave communist, Olga Benário, was eventually sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp and from there to Bernburg Euthanasia Centre in 1942, where she was killed in gas chambers.

In the leading roles are Camila Morgado, Caco Ciocler, Luís Melo Fernanda Montenegro, Leona Cavalli, etc. “Olga” was Brazil’s submission to the 77th Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The film has won more than 20 awards in Brazil and internationally.

Recently, “New Star Art Cinema” presented the film exclusively at Alkyonis cinema in Athens, Greece. A prologue speech about “Olga” was delivered by the KKE MP, Liana Kanelli who described the movie as “a powerful film”.Â
